How It Works

The Beverage Hydration Index (BHI) measures how much fluid your body actually retains from a drink compared to plain water. Water is the baseline at 1.0. Milk scores 1.5 because protein and fat slow gastric emptying. Coffee scores 0.98 — the caffeine is a mild diuretic, but not enough to offset the water content.

Tip: Build a daily plan that hits your fluid goal while keeping sodium and caffeine in check. If you're a salty sweater, prioritize high-sodium drinks. If you're trying to lose weight, watch the calorie column.
